Trekking to Embrace History and Change The Futures of Little Aussies

Everyday heroes from around the nation have completed a journey of a lifetime in support of our vision that all kids have a safe and happy childhood free from abuse and neglect.

The nine-day trek was an emotional, physical and spiritual journey along the Kokoda trail within the dense jungle of Papua New Guinea, and the 27 enthusiastic trekkers have prepared (physically and mentally!) for months.

Dr Neil Carrington, Act for Kids CEO and one of the 27 trekkers, said they have raised $258,774, which is enough to provide over 2,580 hours of therapy for children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

“By embarking on this momentous challenge, the trekkers are showing just how determined they are to promote the important work we do, and they will help us continue providing the best possible support for children and young people suffering from abuse and neglect,” Dr Carrington said.

With the journey concluding in Port Moresby on ANZAC Day, our team of trekkers had the privilege of taking part in the Dawn Service to honour the history of Kokoda, where the 1942 World War II battlefield will undoubtedly be filled with hair-raising history and emotion. Trek Leader Glenn Azar walked alongside our trekkers through the incredible history, and recounting many stories of heroism, courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.

Dr Carrington’s father and uncle both fought for Australia during the Kokoda Track Campaign and with Dr Carrington’s father passing away recently, it makes this journey all the more poignant for him.

The Kokoda Trek is part of our ‘Trek for Kids’ initiative where we arrange unforgettable adventures that raise funds to provide free therapy and support services to children and families who have experienced or are at risk of child abuse and neglect.

Take a look their journey along the challenging Kokoda trail as they embraced the history and trekked with a mission to change children’s futures. They are so close to reaching their goal of raising $327,000, it’s not too late to donate!
