This month, the Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment held the annual ‘Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools’. The awards aim to recognise and reward excellent practice in Queensland state schools that significantly improve quality outcomes for students.

The Royal Children’s Hospital School won the ‘Showcase Award for Excellence in Inclusive Education’ for the schools program; Empowering Kids to Fly, an initiative of Act for Kids’ Early Education Program.

This award category recognises programs which create positive outcomes and improved performance for students through:

  • catering for their diverse needs
  • identifying and removing barriers to achievement
  • consistent curriculum and high quality teaching
  • productive partnerships
  • instructional leadership, and
  • improved student achievement.

During State Education Week (5 – 11 May 2013), the Early Education Program team from Wooloowin were invited to showcase information about the program at the regional event.

Act for Kids CEO, Dr Neil Carrington, said that the Early Education Program kindy is our most intensive program in Brisbane. This unique program combines therapy with early education and learning for children who cannot cope with a normal school environment due to the impact and developmental delays from trauma from abuse and neglect.

“The Empowering Kids to Fly program highlights our long-term commitment to the Royal Children’s Hospital School and the importance of providing therapy support and early learning through our kindy, so that children don’t miss out on any early education,” Dr Carrington said.

The Royal Children’s Hospital School has been invited to enter a State Award submission. It is expected that 21 state finalists will be announced on Wednesday 31st July 2013.
