Act for Kids Gold Coast has been chosen as the fortunate recipient of the 2014 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards, consisting of 10 hardcover books from the three to five years category. Now in their 11th year, these respected awards promote quality Australian children’s literature, the role of speech pathologists in language and literacy development, and a love of learning from books. Speech pathologists play a vital role in the development of key speaking and listening skills, including awareness of the sounds in words and language comprehension.

One of this year’s judges was Angie Canning, a local Speech Language Pathologist, who visited the Gold Coast centre on behalf of Speech Pathology Australia to present the donation to Act for Kids Speech Language Pathologist, Jennifer West.

Professor Deb Theodoros, Speech Pathology Australia president said speech pathologists understand the link between language, speech and reading.

“Not only are the winning books great to read but they also encourage good language and literacy skills among children.

“Sadly, those with poor literacy skills will find it harder to get an education, find a job, and take part in our society. Literacy is a vital and fundamental life skill,” Deb Theodoros said.
