Minister for Education visits Napranum Safe House

Last month we welcomed Minister for Education Hon. Grace Grace MP and Director-Generals Tony Cook and Mary-Anne Curtis to our Napranum Safe House in Far North Queensland.

We were humbled to share the work we do in the local community to help keep kids safe and connected to family, culture and country.

Grace said, “Travelling to my Ministerial Champion community of Napranum is one of the highlights of the year.”

In partnership with Traditional Owners and the Queensland Government, Act for Kids operates safe houses in some of the most remote communities in Australia; Aurukun, Doomadgee, Kowanyama, Napranum and Pormpuraaw.

Many Aboriginal children and young people under child protection orders or investigation are placed in care outside of their communities making maintaining family, community and cultural connections impossible.

The SafeKIDS Program aims to help keep kids in community. Our safe houses provide a safe and culturally appropriate home environment for children aged 0 to 17 years to remain within their communities whilst their ongoing child protection intervention and placement needs are assessed.

The safe houses also develop workforce capacity within the community through the training and employment of local community members.
