Earlier this month, Metricon Stadium became a one-stop-shop for those impacted by homelessness across the Gold Coast when Homeless Connect was staged at the venue.

The event allows homeless people from across the city to get in touch with a variety of community services, including health and wellbeing, legal advice and counselling. Act for Kids Gold Coast supported the event by handing out goods to kids and families in need.

Gold Coast Acting Mayor, Donna Gates, said homelessness is a growing problem with around 800 people in the city sleeping on the streets and a variety of other places each night.

“Last year it was a fantastic day where hundreds of people came out and were able to take advantage of really great services, given freely, to assist them,” acting Mayor Gates said.

One of our talented volunteers, Helen Matthews, made stress balls and play dough to entertain the kids. Our generous sponsor Smartline donated $500 to help buy slippers, blankets, pillow pets, colouring books, coloured pencils, bubbles and reading books. A Gold Coast family also donated pyjamas, slippers, nappies, beanies and blankets.

A big thank you to everyone for getting behind this event!
