Gold Coast SUNS player, Zac Smith, won the Jim Stynes Award for Community Leadership by demonstrating his commitment to the community. Through this award he received $20,000 from the AFL to donate to charities or community programs of his choice.
As part of this award, Act for Kids was chosen to receive $4,000 in funding for purchasing iPads as clinical tools. The iPads will be used by our occupational therapists, speech therapists and psychologists during therapy sessions with children on the Gold Coast to help encourage engaging and interactive learning.
Through the Gold Coast SUNS Horizons Program, Act for Kids was awarded an additional $2,500 grant towards our Youth Adventure Program on the Gold Coast, an outreach activity-based program designed for young people during the school holidays.
The Horizons Program focuses on three activity areas of social responsibility and involves a range of projects and activities that improve community safety. Youth homelessness and domestic violence awareness are key priorities and Zac Smith is the Domestic Violence Awareness Ambassador.
In 2012, Gold Coast SUNS players completed over 5,000 hours of community work and activity through over 1,700 appearances.
