Gender equality advocate Chloe Shorten joined lifetime Act for Kids ambassador, Kay McGrath OAM, as special guest speakers at the sold-out Act for Kids International Women’s Day lunch last Friday.
The lunch held at Waters Edge, Portside, was attended by more than 170 likeminded people who shared a common vision for all children to have a safe and happy childhood.
Act for Kids CEO Dr Katrina Lines said IWD was aligned with the organisation’s purpose to help keep kids safe, heal from trauma and lead happy lives.
“As we reflect on the significance of International Women’s Day, let us continue to advocate for gender equality, uplift one another, and work towards a more inclusive and just society for all,” Dr Lines said.
“Because when women and girls are empowered, they have more opportunity to voice their rights and advocate for their communities, including their children and family.”
This year’s IWD theme of #InspireInclusion aimed to forge a better, more inclusive world for women – a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
During a question-and-answer session, Auto & General Board Chair, Cindy Batchelor said every organisation had the opportunity to inspire inclusion.
“We need to ensure that we create those pathways, that we actually are identifying women who have the potential to step into leadership roles and helping them achieve their goal,” she added.
Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Dealer Principal, Kenneth Got, said the theme to him meant listening and respect.
“I did ask my two daughters, ‘what does this mean to you?’ My seven-year-old said to me, ‘Dad, it’s about everyone getting the same treatment and a fair go’.”
The funds raised at the event will support Act for Kids’ Integrated Therapy Service, which provides therapy to children who have experienced trauma from abuse, neglect and violence.
The celebration was proudly presented in partnership with Budget Direct powered by Auto & General and Mercedes-Benz Brisbane.
The event also received generous donations of auction and raffle prizes from Sealy Posturepedic, Mercedes-Benz Brisbane, Budget Direct powered by Auto & General, Five Star Cinema, Australia Zoo, Escape Manor, Lumière Events & Culinary Studio, Lomondo Olive Oil, Tall Peaks Shiraz & Sauvignon Blanc, Cork & Chroma, Ping Pong Restaurant, Petals Florist Network, HOTA, Scarborough Wine Co, Myer, Dendy Cinemas Portside and Pinot & Picasso.
