The Act for Kids Child and Family Centre of Excellence at James Cook University, took out top honours at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2017 North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards in Cairns last month.

The Townsville centre, designed by m3architecture, received the J W Wilson Award for Building of the Year in Cairns in May.

The awards jury praised the centre as an “emblematically tough but tender collection of structures” that “pivots around a grove of trees at the forested edge of the university campus’ and ‘choreographs a passage for children’s healing.”

Renee McAllister, Act for Kids Regional Director said the team are all very proud the Act for Kids Child and Family Centre of Excellence has been recognised.

“M3 Architecture understood our unique needs and their design provides a welcoming and beautiful therapeutic space for abused and neglected children in North Queensland.”

With integrated therapy, education and research services under one roof, the centre’s features include connected outdoor play areas and therapy rooms. Each therapy room has a view of the outdoor play areas and the specialist preschool, with indoor and outdoor play, is also easily accessible when required.

The centre is now a finalist in the Queensland State Architecture Awards to be announced on 23 June 2017.
