How Mondays Changed Maddie’s Life

Five-year-old Maddie has lived through moments that we can only imagine. From birth, she was physically, emotionally and verbally abused by her parents, witnessing severe domestic violence and substance abuse.

Maddie’s parents showed her very little love and affection and there were no games or learning experiences in her home. Most days, Maddie was left to her own devices, charged with feeding, entertaining and caring for herself.

Although she looks like any other little girl, the trauma she suffered has left scars that will last a lifetime without ongoing therapy.

Due to the abusive nature of her home, Maddie was removed from her parents and now lives with her grandmother. As a result of the ongoing trauma, her speech and language was severely delayed, and later she suffered separation anxiety from her grandmother, and was unable to safely leave her side. Maddie only communicated with her grandmother using gestures such as pointing, and very basic single words. She doesn’t always understand her feelings; they’re big, loud and overwhelming.

Every Monday, Maddie has been receiving speech therapy and psychological support from Act for Kids to build on her relationship with her grandmother to encourage safe separation and develop speech and language skills. After two months of intensive therapy, Maddie had a breakthrough. The normally reserved and very anxious little girl greeted her therapist with a wide grin, declaring that she loves Mondays.

Monday is a day of change.

The changes in Maddie are extraordinary. The support she continues to receive from Act for Kids has inspired a happier and healthier little person, using an occasional phrase or sentence to show off a growing range of expressions.

Maddie continues to learn one Monday at a time, but there's still a way to go.

Maddie and her team of caring adults still have work to do.

And thats where you come in.

Far from standing in her way, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced telehealth into Maddie’s household, meaning she can continue to enjoy every Monday with her speech pathologist and psychologist, learning and playing alongside Grandma more than ever.

She’s seen and experienced more at five than anyone should in a lifetime. Maddie's lived through the sort of trauma that makes most of us look away uncomfortably.

Don’t look away. Continued support and positive reinforcement will help Maddie go on to live the kind of life every child deserves - carefree, secure and full of fun.
