Preventing abuse in vulnerable families

The best way to stop child abuse is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. We work with families with complex problems that put them at risk of child abuse and neglect. Our innovative programs help parents develop skills and strengthen families, preventing them from entering the child safety system.

How we help

Both of our programs, the established Referral for Active Intervention Program and new Helping Out Families Program, build positive relationships and strengthen families through counselling, parental education and referrals to other specialised services as needed, to stop parents from reaching their ‘breaking point’.

Our teams are trained to work with families with many different needs. We work with the whole family and one-on-one to make sure everyone participates in deciding the best course of action.

Our family support staff identify strengths and weaknesses within the family, and work with parents to make their home a safe and loving place. We use a case management model which means we can refer families for specialised support when needed.

We help families access financial management services, domestic violence support, parenting programs and other expert counsellors as well as connecting families with local support networks like play groups and child care.

We work with families in Cairns, Yarrabah and on the Gold Coast.
