National Families Week, 15-21 May, is a timely reminder of the vital role families play in our communities. ACT for Kids has highlighted 10 easy but important ways families can embrace this year’s theme, families make all the difference: helping kids to grow and learn.

Rolleston Coal workers and Xstrata donate $30,000 for kids

Rolleston Coal’s work crew B raised an astounding $15,000 for ACT for Kids through a recent fun run and auction. Xstrata Coal Queensland generously matched the amount resulting in a $30,000 donation to help abused and neglected children and their families.

North Queensland News joins the crusade against child abuse

Kids Crusader

North Queensland News (NQN) has become ACT for Kids’ first Corporate Crusader. NQN launched the partnership with a generous $5,000 donation and so far 33 staff have signed up as Kids’ Crusaders, donating monthly to contribute over $6,000 per year.

Child abuse and neglect is the elephant in the living room of thousands of homes – in every neighbourhood, every community. More than 31,500 children and young people suffered abuse or neglect in Australia in 2010-11, almost 6,000 in Queensland alone, and they’re only the ones authorities know about.

A recent report on child abuse and neglect across Australia shows that while the number of reports, investigations and confirmed cases can fluctuate due to changes to definitions, legislation, systems and processes across each state and territory, the number of actual children who suffer abuse and neglect is not changing.

24 hour beach run to raise funds

Sunshine Coast university lecturer, Colin Solomon tested his physical endurance on Thursday 8 December 2011, running for 24 hours on a circuit from Alexandra Headland to Maroochydore. Mr Solomon’s goal is to raise funds and awareness for ACT for Kids.

Indigenous cadets ready to service community

Nine Indigenous cadets graduated from ACT for Kids' innovative Indigenous Workforce Strategy (IWS) on 11 November in Cairns, marking the start of their careers in community services. Four graduated with a Certificate III and five graduated with a Certificate IV in Community Services Work.

Queenslanders face up to help abused kids

The inaugural 'Channel Seven /ACT for Kids Appeal' closed at midnight Friday 10 September and raised $89,645 for the vital services provided free to abused children and their families throughout Queensland.

Little girl's big gesture

Four-year-old Nicola Hitchcock of Townsville made a generous donation of $38 to the Channel Seven/ACT for Kids Appeal on Saturday. Nicola and her Mum, Leigh Turner, asked friends invited to her birthday party to donate to ACT for Kids, a Queensland charity providing free professional therapy to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect, in lieu of a present.
